Thermo-mechanical treated(TMT) rebar is suitable material for reinforcing concrete structures on accounts of similarity in thermal expansion, ability to bond well with concrete and, above all the ability to shoulder most of the tensile stress acting on the structure and also steel manufacturing industry has successfully developed a corrosion-resistant variety of rebar for the construction industry. As the TMT is the finish product thus proper control of rolling parameters and water box is needed to achieve adequate property. Water box plays an important role for achieving the final structure and property of the rebars.Water box is responsible for outer rim formation and which helps to achieve the yield strength of the material. The present paper highlights failure investigation of a failed rebar during bending operations. From Fractography and microstructural analysis it is confirmed that the rebar sample failed in brittle manner due to through harden martensitic structure and which indicates that there is some anomaly in water box resulting in these premature failures.

Corrosion in a carbon steel refinery hydrocarbon line
A interesting paper in « Case study in Engineering Failure Analysis » published on ScienceDirect.com.
An explosion and fire occurred at a refinery site leading to the evacuation of the site and to millions of pounds worth of damage to the facility. A laboratory investigation was carried out to establish the immediate cause and any underlying factors that may have contributed to the incident. This paper brings out the detail of investigation carried out.

Premature cracking of dies for aluminum alloy die casting
An interesting paper of Bogdan Pawlowski, AGH University of Science and Technologie in Krakow, published in « Archives of Metallurgy and Materials » :
Two identical dies for aluminum alloy die-casting failed prematurely because of a number of parallel cracks on the working surface. These cracks were of a mechanical nature related to incorrect microstructural banding orientation of the die core and related to improper heat treatment. The root cause of premature cracking of dies was improper heat treatment (temper embrittlement).
Analysis of notch effect in the apparent fracture toughness and fracture micromechanisms
This paper, reported by Sciencedirect.com, presents an analysis of the notch effect on two ferritic-pearlitic steels operating within their corresponding lower shelf, and develops an experimental programme, composed of 28 CT characterisation specimens and 72 CT validation specimens, together with finite elements analysis with the aim of validating the apparent fracture toughness predictions provided by the Theory of Critical Distances. The results have shown how this theory provides reasonable predictions of the apparent fracture toughness of the material .
The research is completed with the analysis of the evolution of fracture micromechanisms when the notch radius increases, revealing a direct relation between this evolution and the apparent fracture toughness observations.

Failure analysis of solenoid valve components
Valve had failed as a result of particles of material becoming trapped between the valve seat recess and the valve seat ball, leading to erosion of the valve seat recess, valve seat ball and the valve operating pin; this allowed hydraulic fluid to flow when the valve was nominally in the de-energised position. The material of construction of the valve seats was not compliant with engineering drawings. The investigation demonstrated the importance of maintaining the cleanliness of hydraulic systems and of the need to control the materials of manufacture in safety critical applications.

The shielding effect of wild type iron reducing bacterial flora on the corrosion of linepipe steel
Highlights : Microbes cause significant damage in oil and gas engineering structures. 16S rRNA gene sequence indicates the presence of mixed bacterial consortium. Biotic system, confirms the presence of various oxides of Iron. IRB consortium exhibits inhibitory action on the corrosion process. Pitting was much more evident in the abiotic system than the biotic system.
