Effect of Heat Treatments on Fatigue Failure and Fracture Toughness of Various Tool Steels

IJCETA paper published in « International Journal of Current Engineering and Technology » and available on International Press Corporation.

This paper present the state of the art review on the effect of the various heat treatments on fatigue strength and fracture toughness of the different tool steels. The different researchers used the experimental tests like thermal fatigue test, thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) test for calculation of fatigue strength and threepoint bend tests for fracture toughness of the tool steels.

Premature cracking of dies for aluminum alloy die casting

Die casting AluminiumAn interesting paper of Bogdan Pawlowski, AGH University of Science and Technologie in Krakow, published in « Archives of Metallurgy and Materials » :

Two identical dies for aluminum alloy die-casting failed prematurely because of a number of parallel cracks on the working surface. These cracks were of a mechanical nature related to incorrect microstructural banding orientation of the die core and related to improper heat treatment. The root cause of premature cracking of dies was improper heat treatment (temper embrittlement).

Failure Analysis of Rocker Liner used as a charging system of Blast Furnace

In this study, failure analysis of rocker liners used for charging system of Blast Furnace was carried out. The failed rocker liner samples shows non-uniform distribution of carbides, resulted in variation of hardness as well as wear properties. After proper heat-treatment and chemistry modification, the Rocker Liner obtained high hardness (with uniformity) due to proper distribution of carbide phases in the tempered martensitic matrix. Thus proper heat treatment is needed to achieve optimum property with changing the material composition to deal with this stringent working condition. Rocker liner with modified microstructure was trailed in the Blast Furnace and it has given a life of around 20-22 months life.

Effect of Surface Treatment on Tribological Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Implant Alloy

In this work Ti-6Al-4V implant alloy is treated under various conditions of heat treatment, shotpeening and shot blasting operations on a pin on disc wear testing machine.

In this work the effect of above surface treatments were studied on the wear behavior of Ti-6Al-4V implant alloy and an improvement in the wear resistance of the alloy is reported.

Abstract Metal carbides play an important role in deciding the end properties and ultimately the suitability of the austenitic stainless steels for various applications. Austenitic stainless steels, being nonhardenable via phase transformation, are subject to solution annealing to ensure maximum … Lire la suite
