Corrosion in Fire Protection Systems
A paper published on the site of FM Global. The purpose of this technical report is to explain corrosion in fire protection systems (FPS). Factors such as pipe weld corrosion, residual water in dry pipe systems, trapped air in wet pipe systems, microbiologically influenced corrosion, and corrosive water chemistry are discussed. A corrosion resistant sprinkler system for highly corrosive exhaust duct is also addressed. This report provides the basis for development of corrosion mitigation strategies of existing FPS and lays out directions for further study on corrosion mitigation and management of FPS.
Failure analysis of deaerator/sourgas stripper cylinder of ammonia
A new « Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis » online 17 June 2014, about the cracking leakage accident of deaerator/sourgas stripper cylinder in a chemical fertilizer plant. The analysis results indicated that improper welding was the main reason for the cylinder cracking failure. Chromic carbide (Cr23C6) was precipitated at partial grain boundaries of the transition region between base metal and weld seam and induced the depletion of Cr element at the grain boundary and in the vicinity of grain boundary. Cl− in the media was enriched at the grain boundary of chromium depletion region and formed pitting corrosion, which could lead to stress-corrosion cracking of cylinder under tensile stress.
Crack of a first stage blade in a steam turbine
A new Case Study in « Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis », Volume 2, Issue 2, October 2014, Pages 54–60
The failure of the first stage blade in a steam turbine of 55 MW was investigated. The blade was made of 17-4 PH stainless steel and has been used for 12 years before failure. The current work aims to find out the main cause of the first stage blade failure. The result showed that the crack at the blade root tang was due to corrosion fatigue and the crack occurred at the blade root fillet owing to stress corrosion cracking.
Premature failure of heat trace stainless tube
A interesting paper in « Case study in Engineering Failure Analysis » published on ScienceDirect.com. In this case study, a premature failure of Heat Tube was observed. The corrosion product of failed tube indicated the presence of sulfur. This paper brings out the detail of investigation carried out.

SCC investigation of low alloy ultra-high strength steel
An interesting paper in « Chinese Journal of Aeronautics« published on ScienceDirect.com.
The paper reports detail of investigation carried out. SCC behavior of low alloy ultra-high strength steel 30CrMnSiNi2A in neutral 3.5 wt%NaCl solution is investigated by SSRT with different strain rates under OCP, cathodic, and anodic polarization potentials, electrochemical measurements and surface analysis technique. The effect of strain rate on SCC behavior is analyzed and SCC mechanisms at OCP, cathodic and anodic polarization potentials are discussed in detail.
Corrosion in a carbon steel refinery hydrocarbon line
A interesting paper in « Case study in Engineering Failure Analysis » published on ScienceDirect.com.
An explosion and fire occurred at a refinery site leading to the evacuation of the site and to millions of pounds worth of damage to the facility. A laboratory investigation was carried out to establish the immediate cause and any underlying factors that may have contributed to the incident. This paper brings out the detail of investigation carried out.
