Les textes des conférences de la 5 e édition, Fatigue Design, la conférence internationale de la conception vis-à-vis de la fatigue, sont en ligne sur SciencDirect.com. Biennale reconnue et attendue de la conception vis-à-vis de la fatigue, le Congrès international Fatigue Design a rassemblé plus de 300 personnes au Cetim à Senlis les 27 et 28 novembre 2013 Cette conférence internationale présente les démarches innovantes et les avancées scientifiques de la conception en fatigue à la prolongation des durées de vie. Au cœur de ces journées : les applications industrielles. Les thèmes habituels sont évidemment au programme de ces deux journées avec : la fatigue des assemblages soudés qui associe approche expérimentale et simulation numérique, les chargements complexes qui intéressent les industriels des domaines du transport, de l’énergie, mais aussi des laboratoires internationaux spécialisés dans le domaine de la fatigue. Au sommaire également : la prise en compte des paramètres du procédé d’élaboration des matériaux pour obtenir les caractéristiques en fatigue attendues par les industriels. Sont concernés notamment, les aciéristes désireux de maîtriser le comportement à la fatigue de leurs produits. Parmi les autres thèmes récurrents, citons : les méthodes expérimentales de la fatigue (« fatigue testing »), et la propagation des fissures par fatigue.

Failure analysis of the pulleys during the press-fit assembling process
A case study published in « Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis« .
This article highlights failure investigation of the pulleys during a press-fit assembling process. Pulleys are used to transmit power between rotational mechanical elements. Failure analysis was found that cooperative influence of higher carbon content with combination of elongated sulphides is reason for pulleys cracking. Steel cleanliness and homogeneous structure is an important factor for users of steel. The success of production process is connected with the optimal quality of steel.

Failure analysis of work rolls of a thin hot strip mill

In hot rolling mills, premature failure of rolls is a major concern as it adversely affects the mill operation as well as production. Analysis of failed roll materials and actual rolling conditions in service are therefore necessary to understand the roll failure mechanism and thereby improve the wear resistance and extend the service life of rolls.
The hot strip mill referred here consists of six stands wherein high chromium (Hi-Cr) iron rolls and Indefinite Chilled Double Poured (ICDP) cast iron rolls are being used for finishing rolling of the strips in the last two stands. The thin strip mill produces strips in the thickness range of 1.0–12.7 mm. This work describes two different types of roll failure cases and their analysis which was carried out using destructive as well as non-destructive testing techniques (NDT).

Failure analysis of Co–Cr hip resurfacing prosthesis during solidification
A paper published on january 2013 in « Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis« .
In this study a failure originated during solidification process into the femoral stem component of Hip Resurfacing prosthesis was investigated. The results exhibited hot tearing, shrinkage porosity and metal oxide films due to inadequate heat dissipation during solidification process, as a consequence of poor investment casting ceramic mold configuration. Also in this paper was improved the casting design solving this kind of defects.
Use of Aerospace Fasteners in Mechanical and Structural Applications

Abstract. The intention of the present short review is to introduce to the non-specialist reader the feasibility of the use of alternative materials not generally considered by engineers working in mechanical and structural applications. That is, the use of specialised aerospace rivets in the more general area of construction is considered. To this end, the text briefly overviews the different types of fasteners used in the construction industry and their common mechanisms of failure.
Une proportion importante des défaillances mécaniques sont liées à des problèmes d’assemblage. Vissage, soudage, rivetage, collage… aucun type n’est épargné.
Le Cetim traite pour sa part, plus d’une centaine de cas d’analyses de défaillance liés à cette problématique par an.

A new case study in failure analysis published by ScienceDirect.com. This technical paper summarizes the case study conducted for truck flywheel starter ring gears with diameter of 470 mm in order to reduce hardness variation by optimization of induction hardening and tempering processes.

Failure analysis on unexpected wall thinning of heat-exchange tubes in ammonia evaporators

A failure incident of heat-exchange tubes in ammonia evaporators, which suffered from unexpected wall thinning after only one-year service with respect to their original design lifetime of fifteen years, was reported and carefully analyzed. The analysis results demonstrated that the unexpected wall thinning of tubes was primarily ascribed to multiple corrosion factors including uniform corrosion, pitting and interaction behavior between them. Relative failure mechanisms were discussed in detail and prevention measures were also proposed for ammonia evaporators under similar operating condition.
Influence of Weld Defects on the Fatigue Resistance of Thick Steel Plates

Abstract : Multi-wire submerged arc welding (SAW) process is conventionally used for long welds with large cross sections in tubular steel tower manufacturing. By applying non-vacuum electron beam welding (NVEBW), the number of passes and the heat input can be notably reduced. For plate thicknesses of 20 mm or more the continuous appearance of solidification cracks inside the weld cross section rouse a great challenge. The fatigue resistance is reduced significantly and the safety of the component cannot be ensured. In this paper analytical and experimental investigations are discussed for predicting fatigue life of defective welds.
